Very Useful Scripts and Pluggable GUI Solutions

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Sometime ago, a friend of mine consulted me on how to develop a newsletter management system for his client based on PHP and MySQL.
We talked for a while on this and though this was simple enough to create a fairly simple newsletter management system from scratch, at the end of one month of his development, he had various issues regarding emails not being sent properly. It finally took his developer 2 months to get it over with and resulted in many support tickets to his hosting company. Because his website was on a shared host, he got limited to sending a # number of emails per hour and worse still, the emails couldn't be sent with HTML embedded in them (Content-type: text/html) - the HTML page had to sent as an attachment instead.

At first I recommended to use Google Apps to host emails, but later found out that there's a limitation of sending about 50 emails at a time using Google Mail.

A few weeks later I found out about phpList - and open-source Newsletter Management System based on PHP & MySQL ! If only I had known that before ! It may require a lot of customization, but the ground work is already done which would've saved a load of time for my friend & his developer.

Here is a list of very common pluggable GUI solutions for the web, most of them based on PHP and MySQL. I shall update this list when I stumble across more such useful solutions.

I've not mentioned full-blown solutions like CMSes & frameworks such as Joomla, e107, Spring, Drupal, Xaraya etc where you would normally install in the primary folder of your domain. On the other hand, the following would normally be installed at the subdomain or subfolder level of your primary domain.

Website.in Domain Name Expiration

Saturday, December 23, 2006
One of my .org domain names expired sometime back. Infact I was waiting for it to expire and buy it again using using Website.in's .org promo which ends on 31st December 2006. The promo gets you to buy .org (also .info) domain names for $2.15 which comes to around Rs 96 - for the entire year ! Thats a pretty good deal for less than a hundred bucks here. Since I had no website associated with it and wasn't really afraid of anyone backordering it since the name is really not worth it except for me. I waited right till the end of pendingDelete period to have it back into the available pool list. To my surprise, I found that Website has renewed the domain name under their behalf while the control is still in my hands. I still have the option of renewing the domain name in my control panel. The expiration is now set to December 2007. For those of you who want to buy a domian name for a low rate (Rs 96 for .org till 31/12/06, Rs 96 for .info, Rs 180 for a .biz and Rs 202 for .us) - this is the best time. 1. Buy the domain. 2. If you can afford hosting, good - if not, set it up at Google Apps for you Domain. 3. If you've not ready to setup any sort of hosting but still want the domain fearing it'll be bought by someone else, buy it now and renew 23 months from the date of purchase. Since you own it for one year, you don't have to worry about it for an entire year. For the next one year, Website will renew it under their behalf but you still got the option of taking it back for another entire year. Please remember though, if you are goning to renew it after Website has renewed it, you are paying for the renewal from the date it originally expired. Lets say you bought a domain on 31st Dec 2006 and it expires on 31st Dec 2007 - Website renews it automatically on 31st Jan 2008 (still under your full control 30-45 after expiration). New expiration is 31st Dec 2008. You decide to renew it for 1 year on 30th Dec 2008 - the expiration would still be 31st Dec 2008 even though you get total control over it just for 1 day. So your best bet would be to renew for 2 yrs. Did you think you could get away renewing every 1.99 years paying for only 1yr ? IMHO, this strategy of Website is really good since backordering your expired domain would take a year to get it. Im not sure how long this strategy will last, but on the safe side, if you really want the domain, just renew for 10yrs in one shot.

Google Apps for Domains

Friday, December 22, 2006
Ok, this may be old news, but this is intended for Indian individuals/startups especially non-IT ones. There is one thing I find common in a lot of individual freelancers/businessmen and very tiny-sized companies in India. The have their domain name registered for their official use yet disclose only their gmail account to others esp on the internet. I've seen at various places (joblistings, classifieds, realestate etc) where there is a proper website associated with the post but the contact email address given is their gmail email address. I've seen replies like "Is this a real company ?", "At least get a proper email address". People tend not to respond if the email address is that of free one thinking its not a reputed company. But there are genuine people who just don't yet have enough of their initial capital. The advantage of gmail over having to deal with their domain email is pretty obvious since Google has put tons of effort on Gmail. 1. Spam. This is probably the most relevant reason since Gmail would block better than webhosts giving their own spam solution. 2. Space. Cost is a factor and given the number of emails pouring in, you probably wouldnt have enough email storage at your host and will either end up POP-deleting or buying extra space. We all like to keep a copy of almost everything on the internet now-a-days and buying extra space for a startup wouldnt be the next choice of investment. Gmail's almost-3GB is definitely more eye-catching. 3. Control Panel. The last few email control panels on webhosts I've used were GoDaddy's, 1and1's, Horde, Squirrel, NeoMail. All are good but nothing is really good enough is it? You defintely have far better and more features in Gmail, esp the conversation layout. Plus, Google will always self-update, while we got to depend and wait on the webhost for updates. 4. Free POP/SMTP. The advantage is over other free email providers like Y! etc where POP and SMTP are paid services. Others like HotPoP have some sort of limits on the number of mails transferred. G does not stand for God. 1. The biggest disadvantage of Gmail is ofcourse, not being able to create folders. 2. Sponsored Ads. But then....thats the whole idea for their free service. 3. Privacy. The whole world knows they use our data for their own statistics. 'Free' is their marketing technique. Unless your emails are really 'top secret', I don't see the need to worry on this. Google Apps for Domains (http://google.com/a) is targetted for small-size organizations to have their basic needs like emails, calendar, startup page and chat setup all by Google for free. The only thing you got to is buy a domain name and point to Google's servers. This is the best solution for the individuals/tiny-sized companies I mentioned about earlier. Reaons for using: 1. Your prime purpose is ofcourse email visibility which would reflect something like mail@yourdomainname.com or jobs@yourdomainname.com. 2. You could still have yourdomainname.com pointing to a webhost (Google is not really acting as a webhost here) containing a real site, or you could have a template-based site at Google Apps for Domains. The only problem with this is that you cannot edit the hompage's main template. You can have a custom look for the rest of the pages by uploading files. Ultimately, this provision was made for your business to kick-start - not to host heavy dynamic stuff. 3. You can create a startup page for the people who you've partnered with or hired to access their mails, calendar, chat for which you can create separate accounts. The few people who are working with you, can interact in the same circle easily reducing any ambiguity. The startup page can be of different layouts and include various widgets which you can integrate to your site. If you want your custom widget, you can host it at some webhost or maybe even at Google Apps for Domains (it should work since you're uploading an XML file). Creating a widget is not that much of a headache for a web-developer who is into XML and JavaScript. 4. Google is likely to add more services soon, so these 4-5 services aren't the last. I guess this should be more than enough to really make a ignite your business on the internet-point-of-view.

Flickr Pro

Thursday, December 21, 2006
I just signed up for a Flickr Pro 2yr account - and I must say, its totally worth it. Flickr has a developer API that you can use to integrate Flickr services to your website. The only condition when hotlinking your own flickr photo onto your website is your page should have a link back to flickr.com. Interestingly, even for a commercial license, the API is free - unless the usage is very heavy. The reason for buying the pro account, is because they don't have a limit to their space and bandwidth usage, though the maximum upload transfer per month is limited to 2GB. The download transfer is unlimited. This is ideal for amateur photographers who on the practial side, are not going to to be uploading more than 2GB of photos per month - unless the new Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II's price comes down drastically ! For the average person, a 6MP camera is currently affordable. For a 6MP camera, the photo size ranges from 2MB to 2.5MB - which averages to 1000 photos upload per month. This should be just enough for a month for the average user. Here are some free Photo Hosting Sites :

Best Forums

Wednesday, December 20, 2006

We are nearing the end of 2006 years since anno Domini. For the last 3yrs I've spent a lot of my time in forums which has now become a very good replacement for the-mostly-meaningless chatrooms. Good (and most) forums are mainly focused on a particular subject which streamlines the number of users posting content, which is the reason why only relevant topics are posted. And we are also glad to have volunteer moderators who filter out spam posts and such users. But now are we totally making way for blogs ? Blogs have been one of the latest buzz around lately but its definitely not going to wipe out forums. We're talking about Orangles and Apples - they'll always co-exist.

Microsoft has listed the winners of the top bloggers for the year 2006. Hmm...somehow I doubt many would agree to the judges' decision.

Today, Im listing the best forums IMHO on various topics esp technology related ones. I surely havent gone through the entire list in the world, but if its not in the top ten in Google and yet good....well I don't have that much time. I am sure there must be other good forums out there which I have missed, but these are the one I picked out from the ones I didn't miss.

USB = XML ?

Thursday, December 14, 2006
I am total XML fan, wanting to have almost everything propogated via XML. I once posted in a PHP forum regarding ROR (Resources of a Resource) which is a replacement for robots.txt but in XML format. When I asked for others opinion, one response I got was from nielsene who said : Ugh, please no. I hate the growing trend to XML-ify everything. XML is a useful technology, but its not a pancea. In many cases it only adds overhead to both storage and processing. Now, I agree to his point of processing, but then again, processing techniques have become increasingly faster and storage is multiplying by second. I find a similar trend taking place in domain of USB devices. I was searching for an online store to buy the cool Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard and found that it was available at thinkgeek. I was checking out other cool high-tech products and realised that the sitname thinkgeek was just right - theres hardly anything available that would be of interest to the general consumer. Only geeks would even think of buying it ! What the heck is someone going to do with a USB Rocket Launcher or Star Wars Force FX Lightsabers connected to his PC's USB port ? Atleast they could've been connected via bluetooth to get rid of the confinement. Anyway, I was going through some of the USB-based products that could interest me.
Roll-Up Keyboard

FrogPad

Additional Connectivity: PS2
StealthSwitch
7" Widescreen Digital Frame with USB Host
Linksys Network Storage Link
USB Data Link Transfer Cable
USB Skype Phone
Surround Sound USB Audio Adapter
Prodikeys MIDI Keyboard
External USB Video Card
eStarling Wi-Fi Gmail / Flickr Enabled LCD Frame

Additional Connectivity:Wireless 802.11 Network
USB FlexLight
USB Battery Charger
4-Port USB Hub Illuminated Mousepad
If I need to connect all these devices to my PC via USB, I would need 14 extra USB ports ! And these are only the ones I would I want to get now. As my list grows, I would probably need like a 100 USB ports. Do you think this is defintely USB-ifying everything ? English is now the standard universal way for communcation across different territories. XML is becoming the way for software. And now its USB for hardware. I think this justifies the need for a atleast one common channel for propogation in every aspect. I dont think we are -ifying everything, we just need atleat one common route. Now, where can I buy a multi-USB-connector connected via bluetooth ?
